But if you still want to sport a sun-kissed glow, take heart. Today’s self-tanners offer more options and better formulas than ever for achieving a natural-looking glow without even leaving the house.Some of these tanners also offer protection from the harmful ray of the sun.

Here are five ways you can get the most out of your self-tanner.

Step one: Prep your canvas. You wouldn’t put on makeup without first washing and moisturizing your face, right? Think of your body the same way. So prepare your skin for tanning.

Exfoliate skin in the shower, towel dry, and layer on an oil-free moisturizer. Just like with makeup, moisturizer will always help self tanner go on more easily.
